On the Words of Forrest Gump: Shoes

“My momma always said you can tell a lot about a person by their shoes, where they go, where they’ve been.” – Forrest Gump

Shoes are part of everyday life. If you don’t have shoes, your feet could freeze, burn, get cut, be smushed, or any number of things. They also work as a cover. Some people are very self-conscious about their feet thinking that their toes are awkward shapes or the hairs on them are too dark. Maybe their heels are extra scaly or the arches are non existent. However it works, shoes are a major part of our lives. They protect us from harm from the cruel world. That cruel world can cause actual physical harm as well as emotional damage.

Further from the everyday sensible use of shoes, they show a bit of our personality. I know for me, I cannot wear those crazy high heels out in public. I have zero balance and will fall over. There are a few heels that I reserve for work purposes. I will admit that I love them, but you won’t ever catch me out in public in them nor in anything higher.

My style of shoes is nice, simple, and low to the ground. I have about 127 pairs of converse in a rainbow of colors. My love for knee-high boots cannot go unstated. Flats are ok but not a love. Ankle boots have worked their way into my fashion since living in Dublin. But sandals is where my true heart is. With all of that information alone, you can tell that I one, am obsessed with shoes and two, like more simple shoes.

But let’s get deeper in the thought of shoes.

I have countless pairs of converses. If you are going to try to tell something about my by my shoes, start with them. I wear chucks all the time. They are my regular walking shoes. They are my everyday shoes. They are my I’m in a hurry and just grabbed the first thing I saw because I have so many shoes. Converses are simple. They are one color (usually) and go with any outfit. Chucks come in low-top and high-top depending on where your style, and the laces can be changed and designed to look different.

The majority of my converses are incredibly worn down as I have worn them everywhere. Holes pop through the rubber toes, the stitching is falling apart, and the soles leak water into them. They are worn down, beat up, and pitiful looking, but I wouldn’t wear another pair of shoes.

You can tell a lot by my shoes. You can tell that I am a very attached person as I don’t throw out a ratty pair of converses. You can see that I choose comfort over style. It doesn’t matter if they are a little dirty, I still love them.

I’m like that with life. I live a simple life with small pleasures. I cherish things and cannot toss away memories attached to my shoes. You can tell that I have been lots of places as my shoes are worn to bits like my heart. I wear my heart on my shoes.

I’ve been run down, beat up, and left with holes, but that doesn’t mean that I’m any less valuable.
