Just Another Difference Between Ireland and Home

The following is a conversation I had earlier this morning with a friend on Facebook. It details yet another difference between life in Ireland and life in the States.

11:02am

Me

i hate the way Ireland charges the electric bills. it is SO dumb

a guestimation bill? like seriously. what is that? and then all the sudden they slam you with some gigantic crushing real bill?! rude.

 11:07am

Irish Guy

Well that’s because you didn’t submit a reading

11:07am

Me

what does that mean?

we have to read our own meter?!

11:08am

Irish Guy

Yes of course

11:09am

Me

what the crap!? dont yall have people that do that for a LIVING?!

oh my lanta

like, we have power companies that hire people to go check the meters each month

that is so unfortunate

like communism. but worse

11:13am

Irish Guy

Yes but how can they get access to your property when there’s no one home

11:14am

Me

THE METER IS INSIDE!?

11:14am

Irish Guy

Well usually

Depending on the house

Or outside your door which is of course behind your gate

11:27am

Me

this is the craziest stuff i have ever heard

11:29am

Irish Guy

Really ?

11:30am

Me

yeah! i had no idea!

11:30am

Irish Guy

Well there ya go

Is reading your own meter that much of a shock to you ?

11:41am

Me

yeah it is. like i said, the power company does it for us back home

11:43am

Irish Guy

Well Dorothy , you ain’t in Kansas no more 😉

You’re telling me! What craziness is that?!

  1. Haha I thought reading your own meter was very normal, it’s like that in the UK (although sometimes people from the companies do come and read it). You can do the whole thing online. Understanding the charges requires a PhD though 😀
