Top Six Moments in Six Months

I cannot believe I have lived in Ireland for SIX MONTHS!!! I’ve hit the half way marker!!! WHAT!??!?!

In honor of my sixth month anniversary living in Ireland, I am going to be posting some things about the last half-year over the next few days.

First things first, my top six moments in the last six months! They are in no particular order and each affected me differently.

1. Tromso, Norway

Tromso was the perfect two-day trip. I went above the Arctic Circle and fell in love with this little town.  Between the towering snow-covered mountains and the colorful steeped buildings lives a world of perfection.  I saw a reindeer race, skied for the first time, went dog sledding, kind of saw the Northern Lights, and slipped on the ice.  Tromso stole my heart, and I’m not entirely sure I got it back.

2. St. Patrick’s Day

March 17, 2014 was a day I will never forget.  I saw kids running around City Center drunk out of their minds on Paddy’s Day.  My roommates and I stormed Temple Bar with the tourists, and we all saw the trippiest parade ever.  I have no desire to ever do it again, but I will always remember that time I spent St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin.

3. Getting My Own Apartment

Key to MY Apartment!
Key to MY Apartment!

There is no greater joy than moving to your own place.  I lived in a hostel for two weeks while I searched the city for a place to call home.  Apartment hunting is extremely different in Ireland.  It’s really a jungle and a fight to the death. I am lucky to have the place I do. The apartment is the basement of an old Georgian house.  My roommates are fantastic and have become my best friends. Wouldn’t have made it this far without them!!

4. Thanksgiving in Ireland

As an American, the Holiday Season consists of both Christmas AND Thanksgiving. What do a bunch of Americans and a Canadian do in November?! Have Thanksgiving! Several homemade dishes, chocolate, and full bellies later, we all felt a bit closer to home.  Thanksgiving was the day that sealed the deal on my friends here in Ireland.  I am still thankful for each of you!

5. Belgian Chocolate

I’m fairly positive that heaven is full of chocolate, because I went there. Heaven is in Belgium. As a self-proclaimed chocoholic, I can attest to the wonder that is Belgian chocolate. We had bar after truffle after seashell after turtle. We stuffed and shoved chocolate into our mouths, pockets, and bags. Chocolate was everywhere! Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, chocolate with nuts, and chocolate with rum! You name it, the Belgians had it.

6. Getting My Own Column

My Column in the Times-Georgian!!!!
My Column in the Times-Georgian!!!!

What an honor is it to write for the newspaper in my hometown! I cannot believe I have been so blessed with this opportunity. My column is a weekly write-up in the Sunday paper and can also be found HERE!! Check it out if you would like. Being a writer has always been a dream of mine, and it may finally be coming true.

These six months have been an incredible journey. I have been in lust and in love. I made friends and lost a few. Climbed a mountain and slipped on some ice. I ran on the beach and cried in my room.  It’s been an amazing experience and I cannot wait to see what the next six months have in store.
